Demo for the upcoming Pokémon Mystery Rescue Team DX takes us all back to 2006.

In a Nintendo Direct hosted by Nintendo on Jan.1, 2020, Nintendo reveals that they were going to be remaking the class Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team. These original titles debuted back in 2006 and since then, the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games have efinetly been some of the best Pokémon spin off games.

According to Wikipedia, “Game play (of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games) is based on a classic roguelike game, with the player navigating the randomly generated dungeon with their Pokémon team. Movement and actions are turn-based; the player can use basic attacks, Pokémon moves, and items.”

The games itself doesn’t release till March 6, 2020, but Nintendo has released a demo for the game that is currently available on the E-shop.

The classic quiz to determine what Pokémon you’ll play as.

If you are like most Pokémon fans, you have played the original games and seeing this title screen just sends chills down your spin, you can not handle this nostalgia. Like the original, you take this quick personality quiz to determine which Pokémon you will play as.

I got Skitty.

After you determine what Pokémon you are, you then choose your partner. Playable and partner Pokémon consist of Pikachu, Mudkip, Psyduck and many more. The game then seems to follow the original story line. Your partner Pokémon finds you knocked out and you have come to the realization that you have become a Pokémon (a dream of mine).

A screenshot of your partner telling you, you look like a normal Pokémon.

After a bit of chit chat, a mother Butterfree approaches you telling you and your partner that her Caterpie (her child) has fell into a cavern and that she isn’t strong enough to save her child. You and your partner then rush to the Tiny Woods to save Caterpie and play through the tutorial.

Finding Caterpie.

After the quick mission, your partner invites you home since you don’t have a place to stay and invites you to join a rescue team. After you say yes, you and your partner strike a pose and end the day by sleeping.

After a restful night, you and your partner wake up to find a starter kit in your mailbox and go on some missions. The game gives you a chance to play before you advance to the next section of the story so the next couple of days are filled with rescuing and escorting Pokémon through dungeons and sometimes delivering item to Pokémon in dungeons. After a bit of free play, you receive a letter from Magnemite asking for your assistance, two of Magnemite friends (who are also Magnemite) are stuck at the top of Thunderwave cave and it’s now your job to rescue them.

After rescuing the duo, you engage in some more free play. During the demo, you encounter a Diglett who is digging around and creates a tunnel from your home base to Pelippers Post Office (a place where you can find and accept quests). However, in the following days you get word from Dugtrio (Digletts Parent) that their child (Diglett) has been kidnapped. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait till March to save Diglett because that is where the demo ended. There’s some story line details that were also revealed during the demo but they are some HUGE spoilers so they’ll be dis-included in this article.

Playing through the demo left me with a lot of thoughts on how the game is gonna be great and vice versa:

Pros:

  • For the most part, the controls are basically the same. It just feels like a longer DS. There are some new controls added and a couple changed but nothing the tutorial didn’t cover.
  • Many people have mixed reviews about the game being a remake but they’re wrong. Visiting a game I played when I was six as a twenty year old feels great, it brings a smile to the face.
  • One thing that was noticed is that pressing A uses a random move. In the originals, pressing A would yield a basic tackle but I can fun challenges including only using random attacks to fight.

Cons:

  • Hand holding. Though the demo only includes about an hour of game play, you can tell the game is gonna be a lot easier to play than the original. This is to be expected since Nintendo’s main audience is young children but let’s hope they include a master mode.
  • The personality test you would take at the beginning of the game would determine what Pokémon you would play as. However, in this games, if you don’t like the Pokémon chosen for you, you can pick a different one. This one just personally bugs me, having a random Pokémon is part of the fun.
  • You cannot switch spots with your partner. This is both hilarious and infuriating. Most times, I saw myself pushing my partner because I need to retrace my steps.
  • The game gives you maps so you can track your progress in the dungeons. However, these maps also show were enemies and items are. You can enter a dungeon and within five seconds of being there, you know what rooms to find enemies and items in. This is too much in my opinion. It take a HUGE chuck of difficulty out.

Overall opinion, I really enjoyed the demo and I have been sold on the game. I can’t wait to see how Nintendo puts a modern twist on this old school game.
