Azusa Pacific finished its season with an overall record of 10-10 in 2020. Coming off of three-straight conference titles, the Cougars were primed to repeat once again as champs. Unfortunately, their quest for the quad(ruple) ended rather abruptly, similar to how the world has pretty much shut down due to COVID-19.
The Cougars closed out their season with a Hawai’i trip that got them back to .500. The eight games were somewhat of a reset button for APU considering it was the start of conference play. After coming home with a 5-3 record in the PacWest the Cougars were looking forward to the challenges ahead before everyone’s world was flipped upside down.
The NCAA had no choice but to take action to try and avoid the spread of the highly contagious COVID-19. It was very much the correct decision in the moment when they decided to cancel all remaining winter and spring championships throughout all three NCAA divisions. Pretty crazy how quickly this virus has taken the world by storm.
Despite the season coming to a rash end, the Cougars still have their health and have a bright future. But now doesn’t feel like the time to get into that. So, for the remainder of this blog I will be highlighting some of the seniors and their career highlights at Azusa Pacific. I recognize that the NCAA recently has granted waivers to spring sport athletes to compete for another year but still feel this is crucial. Especially if some seniors decide to step away from the game for the last time. Each blog will be titled, “Curtain Call” followed by each of the senior’s respective names.
I wish you all great health during this time and am looking forward to bringing back some of those old memories for the seniors. They deserve a rightful send-off and it’s sad they weren’t able to have that. I’m excited to have the chance to honor some of the players that might not ever get their moment. Check back in a week for the first blog in the Curtain Call series.
