Are you getting ready to be a freshman in college? Well this movie will probably freak you out.
“The Roommate” came out in 2011 and now is being streamed on Netflix. The thriller has crawled its way up in the Netflix Top 10 trending titles since it was released.
The PG-13 film is an entertaining suspense thriller on the idea of what college can be like, minus the crazy psychotic roommate.
When you first see the trailer, you think to yourself that this is probably not going to be good. After watching the movie, you find out that you were partially wrong.
The film speaks for itself, a young girl in college is being tormented by her roommate. The young girl, Sarah, is starting her new life in college but little does she know that her life is about to change horrifically. Her roommate, Rebecca, seems nice at first but quickly becomes obsessive and stalks Sarah. Events start to occur that have you thinking about who you share a room with.
It is a pretty decent thriller but doesn’t have the qualities of being a good horror film. Even though it doesn’t live up to horror film qualities, it provides those here and there jump scares.
The missing characteristics that the film was missing to be good was structure. The beginning was moving way too fast, jumping from scene to scene in a blink of an eye. If the structure was carefully reviewed it could have had potential to be better.
What makes this film strange is that you’ll wonder if you could possibly have a bad roommate. Thinking what you should be prepared for when you’re a freshman in college, getting ready to be in the world all alone.
With these five helpful tips from the movie, you’ll be set to go without having any doubts that your roommate is crazy or has a mental illness.
- If he/she is touching your stuff without asking
Now if you have siblings, you understand that this is such a nuisance when they go through your stuff without asking. For roommates this is code that they shouldn’t be touching your stuff at all. Privacy is a huge deal and no one should be allowed in it unless there was permission granted. If a roommate does this, I wouldn’t say they are crazy but be a bit skeptical and let them know that this isn’t allowed.
- They are obsessively asking for your whereabouts
Sharing locations seems like a big thing in our generation now. Anyone you share your location with can see your whereabouts, without you knowing. Now if your roommate is checking every second and hour where you are, well they are either worried for your safety or being a bit crazy. It only takes a text or call to make sure your roommate is okay, but checking every second and hour that’s a bit weird.
- Answering your phone calls, pretending they are you
Okay now this is where it is crazy, if your roommate is answering your phone calls without asking AND is pretending to be you. Some could say this can be seen as a joke but honestly, this is a privacy thing and shouldn’t be stepped all over on. If a roommate is doing this, definitely talk to them or go straight to the Resident Advisor because that is just weird.
- Got the same tattoo as you
Your roommate is getting the same tattoo as you without telling you. This doesn’t seem crazy, strange or weird, it’s more psychotic. If this tattoo you have has a significant meaning to you, your roommate shouldn’t cross that boundary of getting it. If this happens to me, I’ll most likely change rooms right away because that line of privacy has been broken.
- Starts killing your friends
Oh, you found out your roommate has killed your friends. Definitely do not take matters in your own hands. It’s too late to change rooms/roommates, at this point you better call the police because your roommate checks off all the books on being psychologically crazy.
Hopefully these tips are helpful on your years of sharing a room with someone in college. “The Roommate” is something to watch to get distracted in the world or scare yourself for your upcoming college years.
