Review: Sancho’s Tacos are the way to my heart

Tacos by the beach? I think yes.

If you’ve ever walked around Newport Beach, Calif., you know there’s a lot to look at — adorable condos, cute clothing shops, preppy dogs — you get the point. And when your tummy starts to rumble and you begin to feel the hangry monster, there are also quite a few restaurants you can’t miss. One is Sancho’s Tacos.

Sancho’s Tacos is a small Mexican restaurant located throughout Southern California, including Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, San Clemente, Laguna Niguel, Oceanside and Bakersfield. Popular for its catering services, the chain is willing to serve at weddings, birthday parties, family gatherings or company-wide events. A big party does not scare Sancho’s Tacos.

I was referred to the restaurant by a friend and when I visited Newport Beach, I had to give it a try. The place itself is fairly small, a typical beach-friendly spot. From the outside, it looks like a small house featuring a black shade structure with the restaurant name and logo on the front. There was a small area to sit down and eat but I quickly learned that Sancho’s Tacos is more of a grab-and-go restaurant. The chain serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

It describes its food as the “bombest” in town, which made me want to try it even more. I went during lunchtime and was pretty hungry. The burritos were calling my name, and one stuck out to me the most: the caliguey burrito, which cost $12.15.

This burrito comes with angus tri-tip, fresh guacamole, cheddar jack blend, french fries and sour cream in a char-grilled tortilla. What stuck out to me immediately was the french fries. Never in my life had I tried a burrito with french fries stuffed inside. What was this kind of madness?

I asked one worker what he thought of the burrito, and he said it is one of the most popular off the menu. So I decided to go with it.

My friend ordered Sancho’s nachos, which from the picture looked extremely filling and had more than enough calories for the day. But don’t worry, I supported her decision because I definitely wanted to try some. The nachos come with beans, fresh onions, melted cheddar jack, sour cream, cilantro and your choice of salsa. You can also add a choice of meat for about two dollars more than the original price, which would come out to $10.25.

We only waited about 10 minutes before our order name was called. When I picked up my bag, I looked inside to see a huge burrito nicely wrapped with salsa on the side. Every burrito comes with Sancho’s Tacos’ house salsa, which I was grateful for because I forgot to ask for some. The nachos came out in a huge to-go box and I knew we were in for a yummy treat.

The workers wished us a lovely day and we left with a smile on our faces.

The burrito was delicious. There were so many flavors I could taste and the french fries made it all the better. The only upset about my meal was that I couldn’t finish it all; leftovers took hold.

Sancho’s nachos were a huge hit. I especially liked how almost every chip was covered with salsa, beans, cheese, and every other appetizing addition you can get with the meal. But we couldn’t finish all of the nachos and just like the burrito, leftovers became a reality.

Sancho’s Tacos is a great Mexican restaurant for anyone who loves a quick and filling meal on the go. I especially enjoyed the restaurant’s location, as it was right by the beach and made for an easy trip.
